Here are some tips to help you maintain a better garden.
Starting Your Garden Clean-Up When the snow has melted in your gardens it is a good time to go out and start an initial clean-up by clearing debris which might have blown into your garden over the winter. As soon as the weather warms we should remove any dead plant foliage that remains from the previous year. Drainage Dig extra amounts of organic matter into your garden soil to aid in drainage. Poor drainage often leads to diseases and poor plant growth. |

Daffodils and Tulips Allow Daffodils and Tulips to dry out before you cut them back. This allows them to store up nutrition in the bulbs for next year's flower production.
Spring Flowering Shrubs Spring-flowering shrubs bloom on the previous year's wood. Be sure to trim immediately after the blooms fade. Next year's buds will form this year and you should trim the branches before the buds start to form. Difference Between Tree and Shrub Trees and shrubs are both plants that have woody growth, but how do you tell the difference between a tree and a shrub? The generally acknowledged definition of a tree is a woody plant with a single main erect stem that generally branches to form an elevated crown of foliage. At maturity a tree will have a trunk that has a diameter of at least three inches in diameter and grow to al least thirteen feet. A shrub is a woody plant that produces multiple perennial shoots or branches from its base, some laying close to the ground. A shrub does not have a distinct single trunk. It will usually have a mature height of less than 13 feet and stems no more than about three inches in diameter.
